Car diagnostics in Melbourne
A warning light is a message from the car, not a diagnosis. Car diagnostics in Melbourne from Inhouse Mechanic is for drivers who want that message read at the vehicle, then explained in ordinary language, before anyone replaces parts.
A qualified motor mechanic comes to your home or workplace and scans the car where it is parked. A repair, if one is needed, is quoted separately and does not start until you approve it.
Signs you might need this
- A check-engine light, or another dashboard warning, has come on and stayed on.
- A warning light is flashing, or it comes and goes.
- The engine idles unevenly, hesitates, or stalls after it has started.
- The car feels down on power, or it changes gear in a way that is new.
- You have noticed higher fuel use and want that checked rather than guessed.
- An ABS, airbag or transmission light is on.
- Someone has already mentioned a code, and you want it read again before parts are bought.
What we do
- You tell us the suburb, the year, make and model, and what the car is doing.
- We call during business hours with a figure for the diagnostic visit, or we tell you if the fault cannot be assessed where the car is parked.
- We arrive at the home or workplace you named. We need level ground and room to work around the vehicle.
- We connect a scan tool, read the codes it can see, and look at live data while the engine is running when that is safe on site.
- We look for what we can see without lifting the car: leaks, loose connectors and damage that does not need a hoist.
- We explain the result in plain language. A code names a circuit or a system. It does not, by itself, name the failed part.
- You get a written summary. Any repair is a separate quote. No repair begins until you approve it.
What we check
We read the fault codes the scan tool can see that day. On many cars that includes the engine control unit, and ABS, airbag or transmission modules when the tool and the car allow it. If a module will not communicate, we say so.
Live data is the readings the car produces while it runs, such as sensor values the tool can display. We look at those when the engine can be run safely where the car is parked. We do not road-test on a street that is not a safe or legal place to do it.
What we can do at your place, and what may need a workshop
A driveway scan cannot answer every fault. Smoke tests, pressure tests that are unsafe on site, and inspections that need a hoist are workshop jobs. We say so before you pay for a visit that cannot finish the question.
Airbag systems, and high-voltage parts of hybrid or electric vehicles, have limits on what is safe to open at a home or workplace. If the safe limit is a scan and an explanation, we stop there.
How the quote works
There is no price list on this site. You tell us the car and the issue. We call during business hours with a figure for the diagnostic visit, or we tell you we cannot do it on site. Hours are Monday to Friday 7:00am to 5:00pm, Saturday 8:00am to 2:00pm, Sunday closed.
That figure is for finding and explaining the fault. It is not a price for parts. If a repair is recommended, we quote it separately.
No work starts until you approve it. Estimates are non-binding. Goods and services come with guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. We confirm a realistic window. We do not promise a time we cannot meet.
What to have ready
- The year, make and model.
- Which light is on, whether it is steady or flashing, and when it started.
- What else the car is doing: rough idle, loss of power, a noise, or nothing you can feel.
- Where the car is parked, whether the ground is level, and whether a workplace or apartment car park needs permission.
- Any code or invoice from earlier work, if you have one.
- A phone number we can call during business hours.
