Battery testing and replacement in Melbourne

Battery testing and replacement in Melbourne is for a car that is slow to start, has gone flat, or is showing a battery or charging light. A qualified motor mechanic tests the battery and the charging system before a replacement is quoted.

A flat battery is not always a failed battery. It can be something left on, a drain, or an alternator that is not charging. We separate those causes as far as we can with the car parked at your home or workplace. A replacement is quoted and is not fitted until you approve it.

Signs you might need this

  • The engine cranks slowly, especially after the car has been sitting.
  • The car needed a jump, and you want to know if the battery will do it again.
  • A battery light or a charging-system light is on.
  • Electrical items dim, or interior lights fade with the engine off.
  • The car was jump-started and you want the charging system checked.
  • You can see corrosion on the terminals, or a clamp that moves.
  • The car is at home or at work and you cannot easily take it for a test.

What we do

  1. You tell us the suburb, the vehicle, and what happened: a slow crank, a jump start, a warning light, or a battery you already suspect.
  2. We call during business hours with a figure for the test, and for a replacement if the symptoms are already clear enough. If we need to test first, we say that.
  3. We arrive where the car is parked. The bonnet has to open, and we need room to work without standing in traffic.
  4. We test the battery, including a load test where that can be done safely on site, and we check the charging system, including the alternator, with the engine running when that is safe.
  5. We look at the terminals and the cables we can see. A loose or corroded connection can mimic a tired battery.
  6. We tell you the result in plain language: the battery is serviceable, it should be replaced, or the charging system needs repair before a new battery would help.
  7. If you approve a replacement, we supply and fit it. If you do not, the old battery stays in the car.

What we check

The test checks whether the battery can still do its job, not only the voltage with the engine off. A load test, when we can do it safely, puts the battery under demand.

The charging check is whether the car puts charge back once the engine is running. If the alternator is not charging, a new battery alone will not fix the next flat start.

Terminals, clamps and the visible cables are part of the check. We only clean or tighten a connection when that work is in the quote you approved. If you approve a replacement, we fit a battery that suits the car.

What we can do at your place, and what may need a workshop

We can test, and if you approve it replace, a battery we can reach safely without a hoist. Batteries under a seat, in a wheel well, or behind covers that need the car in the air may be a workshop job.

A stop-start or hybrid battery, or a replacement that needs a scan-tool step, may be a different job. Tell us the model. If we cannot finish that step on site, we will not fit a battery and leave a warning light unexplained.

How the quote works

Tell us the car and what it is doing. We call during business hours with a figure for the test, the replacement, or both when the fault is already clear. There is no battery price on this website.

Hours are Monday to Friday 7:00am to 5:00pm, Saturday 8:00am to 2:00pm, Sunday closed. If the car will not start, call 0415 751 559 as well as sending the form. We confirm a time we can meet.

No replacement is fitted until you approve the quote. Estimates are non-binding. Goods and services come with guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. If the test shows you do not need a battery, that is the result we give you.

What to have ready

  • Year, make and model. The model tells us if the battery may not be in the engine bay.
  • What happened: slow crank, a jump, a dash light, or a battery that is old.
  • Whether the car is stuck, or it starts and you want a test before it fails.
  • Where it is parked, and whether we can open the bonnet without blocking a road.
  • A phone number for a call during business hours.
